Banned Books Week
September 23 - 30, 2006

The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) is a sponsor of Banned Books Week, the only national celebration of the freedom to read. Banned Books Week is held during the last week of September. The other sponsors are the American Library Association, the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and the National Association of College Stores. Banned Books Week is also endorsed by the Center for the Books of the Library of Congress.

Booksellers who celebrate Banned Books Week tell us that it is one of their favorite promotions. Customers are surprised when they learn that there are hundreds of book challenges every year–and that some of their favorites are on the list! They are also grateful to booksellers for raising awareness of this critical issue.

ABFFE, the booksellers voice in the fight against censorship, is dedicated to providing booksellers with the tools to participate in Banned Books Week. For the first time this year, we have produced a Banned Books Week Handbook to provide ideas and resources.  The handbook is available for free.
