                         CELEBRATING CHILDREN'S BOOK ART!

“I am very pleased to be the honorary chair of this years Childrens Art Auction at BookExpo America.  Every single piece of artwork will help create an atmosphere in which our children have the right, and the freedom, to read.”

Children's Art Auctions Boost Kids' Free Speech Rights

ABFFE's two auctions of children's book art that were held in conjunction with this year's BookExpo America triumphed with the help of the children’s book industry’s core. Best-selling illustrators contributed over a 150 pieces of art while publishers and booksellers good-naturedly competed with one-another for the highest bids. $56,000 was raised to defend the free speech rights of young readers.

“We had a lot of fun this year and the art was superb," ABFFE president Chris Finan said. "We are tremendously grateful to Jarrett, Shannon and Michael and to the artists and bidders who made the auction such a big success."

Keeping the festivities rooted in the freedom to read cause, honorary chair Jarrett J. Krosoczka, recounted his own experience with a biased school principal who claimed that ‘comics weren’t books’. He later wowed the audience with his participation in the Slushpile Family Circus, a circus conceived by Shannon Hale and Michael Buckley and featuring non-literary performances by today’s most sought-after illustrators and authors.

"Public bans hurt, but they're not what I worry about.  My fear is that a dozen books are secretly banned for every one book that makes headlines. So my perfect world is one in which librarians and teachers always feel that they have the support to fight challenges and to let communities know what's being done in their name."
